Review of B-Pump Ogikubo —If you’ve spent any time researching climbing gyms in Japan, chances are you’ve heard of B-PUMP Ogikubo. Often regarded as one of the most famous bouldering gyms in the world, this Tokyo climbing destination has developed quite a legendary reputation among climbers. But does it live up to the hype?

To gain a firsthand understanding of what makes this gym so highly regarded, the Bouldering Master team visited B-PUMP Ogikubo and spent time climbing across its diverse range of walls and problems. In this review of B-PUMP Ogikubo, we’ll take an in-depth look at the facility’s layout, assess the route setting and grading, breakdown the pricing, and ultimately determine whether this iconic bouldering gym deserves a spot on your Tokyo climbing itinerary.

Review of B-PUMP Ogikubo: What’s B-PUMP Ogikubo? Why is it famous?

Located just one minute from Ogikubo Station in Tokyo, B-PUMP Ogikubo is widely regarded as one of Japan’s premier bouldering gyms. Occupying the entire third floor of a building, the facility is notably spacious by Tokyo standards. The gym features three main climbing areas that span the floor lengths, highlighted by a distinctive 360-degree wall positioned at its center.

Since February 2024, B-PUMP Ogikubo has been owned and operated by Katsuaki Miyazawa, better known as Katsu. While his official ownership is relatively recent, his influence on the gym extends back more than fifteen years. Katsu is best known as the coach of World Cup and World Championship medalists Mao Nakamura, Tomoa Narasaki, and Miho Nonaka, making him one of the most respected figures in Japanese competition climbing.

Drawing on his extensive experience as a route setter and coach, Katsu has helped establish B-PUMP Ogikubo’s reputation for highly technical and movement-focused climbing. Problems at the gym often emphasize precise body positioning, advanced footwork, coordination, compression, and body tension rather than relying solely on strength. Climbers are frequently challenged to solve creative sequences and refine their movement efficiency, creating a style that closely mirrors modern competition climbing.

This distinctive approach to route setting has attracted climbers from around the world, ranging from recreational enthusiasts to elite competitors. As a result, B-PUMP Ogikubo has become a renowned training destination within the global climbing community.

The gym is also a popular training venue for professional climbers. It is not uncommon for visitors to encounter members of the Japanese national team or international competition athletes during regular sessions. This consistent presence of elite climbers further reinforces B-PUMP Ogikubo’s reputation as one of the most respected and influential bouldering facilities in Japan.

Review of B-PUMP Ogikubo: What Is Climbing Actually Like?

Expect to be challenged. Even the warm-up problems felt as though they demanded thoughtful movement and careful execution rather than simply climbing from hold to hold. From the very beginning, it was clear that B-PUMP Ogikubo places a strong emphasis on technique, body awareness, and problem-solving.

What stood out most to us was the exceptional quality and consistency of the route setting. Every problem felt intentional, with movements designed to teach, challenge, and develop specific climbing skills. Whether you’re training for competitions, refining your technique, or simply looking to become a more well-rounded climber, the experience is both demanding and highly rewarding.

The gym can also be surprisingly humbling. Climbers who comfortably send a particular grade at their home gym may find themselves struggling on similar grades at B-PUMP Ogikubo. Rather than feeling sandbagged, the problems often reveal technical weaknesses that may be overlooked in gyms with different setting styles or grading standards. The emphasis on precise footwork, body positioning, coordination, and movement efficiency exposes gaps in a climber’s repertoire, making each successful send feel genuinely earned. In many ways, this is one of the gym’s greatest strengths, as the lessons learned here translate well to climbing elsewhere.

Despite its elite reputation, the atmosphere remains welcoming and inclusive. During our visit, we encountered climbers ranging from highly motivated athletes focused on improvement to casual visitors simply enjoying a session with friends. The shared enthusiasm for climbing creates an energetic yet approachable environment that makes B-PUMP Ogikubo enjoyable regardless of your experience level.

Review of B-PUMP Ogikubo: What Is The Grading Like?

Instead of using the V-Scale commonly found in North America, B-PUMP Ogikubo primarily uses the Japanese Kyu and Dan grading system.

The progression generally follows:

  • 8 Kyu
  • 7 Kyu
  • 6 Kyu
  • 5 Kyu
  • 4 Kyu
  • 3 Kyu
  • 2 Kyu
  • 1 Kyu
  • 1 Dan
  • 2 Dan
  • 3 Dan

While approximate conversions exist, you should be careful about comparing grades directly. The reason? This gym is famous for “stiff” grading. We can attest that Ogikubo’s grading often felt significantly harder than the same grade on V-Scale, with some grades even feeling two or more grades harder than what they are labeled.

Review of B-Pump Ogikubo: Costs

B-PUMP Ogikubo is not cheap for tourists who just want to test the gym while they are traveling around Japan. Visitors can also rent chalk, which is also free on your first visit.

Here is a breakdown of the cost at B-PUMP Ogikubo.

Absolutely! For experience climbers, B-PUMP Ogikubo is one of the most worthwhile gym visits. For beginners, we still felt that you can enjoy the experience. The gym still offers very interesting lower graded routes and it also is a great place to learn. It offers the chance to challenge yourself, learn very useful technique and skills to improve your climbing even for beginners.
