Aleksandra Miroslaw of Poland etched her name in Olympic history by winning the first-ever gold medal in speed climbing. Miroslaw, who had already made waves in the climbing world with her previous record-breaking performances, solidified her status as one of the sport’s greatest athletes by outpacing her competition in every round.

The lead up to this historic moment was full of shocking moments. The Polish climber amazed spectators as she clocked in a 6.21s finish in the preliminary rounds, which created not only a world, but also a new Olympic record.

Breaking a record is a major feat, but she was not finished. On the same day, she set a whole new record with a time of 6.06s. Sending shockwaves through the crowd as she obliterated her previous record.

New record and a gold medal in her pocket. The final race turned into a neck-and-neck battle between Miroslaw and China’s Deng Lijuan as they both flew up the 15m wall with incredible speed and precision. The nail-biting affair turned into Miroslaw hitting the buzzer a mere eight-hundredths of a second before Deng, securing her gold medal finish with a time of 6.10s.

Silver Medalist: Deng Lijuan

Deng took to the podium to receive the silver medal and setting not only a new personal best, but also an Asian record of 6.18s in the final round against Miroslaw. A proud moment for the Deng and the rest of China’s climbing team despite falling short of receiving the gold medal for the event.

Bronze Medalist: Aleksandra Kalucka

A mere minutes before Miroslaw took to the wall to win the gold medal, her compatriot Aleksandra Kalucka went up against Indonesia’s Rajiah Sallsabillah in the small final. Kalucka was able to keep a steady pace with no slip ups to secure the bronze medal for the event with a 6.53s finish.

Both Kalucka and Sallsabillah got of to a smooth start, but unfortunately, the Indonesian climber slipped early on in the race and didn’t have the time to recover.
