IFSC World Cup Briançon 2024 Results

One week away from the 2024 Paris Olympic Games! The IFSC World Cup Briançon 2024 event marks the end of the World Cup competitions until after the Paris Olympics. Despite the lack of Olympic qualified players, the event showcased some lesser known professional climbers who dominated this year’s World Cup Briançon 2024 event. Find out who made it to the podium at this years event down below!

Speed Climbing

Men’s Speed Climbing

Italy’s Ludovico Fossali stole the show in the men’s speed climbing by hitting his first ever sub-five second time and recieving his first World Cup title in his seven hear career. He held off Spains’ Eric Noya Cardona who clocked in at 5.06s and taking home the silver medal.

China’s Long Jianguo also clocked a sub-five seconds finish to secure him the bronze medal against Germany’s Leander Carmanns in the other lane.

Women’s Speed Climbing

One of the few Olympic qualifying climbers to participate in this World Cup event, China’s Deng Lijuan took home her sixth World Cup title by placing first in women’s speed climbing. Deng managed to clock 6.41s in the final, beating Korean Jeong Jimin, who finished with 6.53s.

Joining Deng and Jeong on the podium was 2024 IFSC World Cup Chamonix women’s speed climbing gold medalist Zhang Shaoquin who claimed the bronze medal at this event.

Lead Climbing

The World Cup Briançon 2024 lead climbing competitions started off with a disappointing announcement from the USA Climbing team regarding their eligibility to compete in the lead events. Unfortunately, USA Climbing failed to confirm the attendance of their athletes with the IFSC. Rules state that the attendance of athletes must be confirmed by a Team Official at an event. The failure to do so resulted in the eight individuals participating in lead to be forcing them to be ineligible to compete at the World Cup Briançon 2024 event.

Men’s Lead Climbing

Japan team dominated men’s lead climbing by placing six athletes in the men’s final. By the end of the night, Team Japan managed to sweep the podium. Comining in first place was Murashita Zento with a finish of 47. This marked his first gold medal at the World Cup stage.

“I’m very happy, this result is a bit surprising to me. I was able to climb to my limit, and climb very well.”

Joining Murashita on the podium were fellow compatriots Yoshida Satone and Omata Shion. Yoshida Satone took home the silver medal with a solid finish of 45. The bronze medal went to Omata Shion who reached the 42+ hold.

All three podium winners were the expected players to beat after all three finished the men’s semi-final by topping the route.

Women’s Lead Climbing

Team Japan takes home the women’s lead gold medal with Kotake Mei winning her first ever World Cup gold medal. She pulled way ahead of fellow competitors by solidifying her gold medal with a 49+ finish.

Kotake Mei was able to pull in front of Italy’s Laura Rogora who won silver after falling off hold 45. Third place went to Austria’s Mattea Pötzi by reaching hold 42+. This acheivement marked Mattea’s first ever World Cup medal after qualifying for her third consecutive Lead final.
