2023 European Qualifiers Climbing Results: Bertone and Roberts Win Olympic Tickets
2023 European Qualifiers Climbing Results
On the road to the 2024 Paris Olympics, we stop in Laval, France for the 2023 European Qualifier event where 100 professional climbers across Europe gathered to compete for their spot in the combined lead and boulder event at Paris 2024. After three days of climbing (from October 26 to October 29) at the beautiful Espace Mayenne Center, the 2023 European Qualifiers climbing results are in with two climbers receiving their Olympic tickets.
Women’s Combined Lead/Boulder
The home crowd was overjoyed to see eighteen year old French climber Oriane Bertone take home the women’s combined gold medal on Sunday (October 29). Bertone showed impressive skill and strength after dominating the boulder round. She performed an almost perfect boulder round by flashing three out of four of the boulder problems.
With an additional strong performance in the lead round, Bertone was able to secure a lead against Serbia’s Staša Gejo who came in second place.
“… I had a chance to climb in front of my people, and I took it. I can’t and will never be able to thank them enough. Laval was a step, big step yes, but let’s keep going. Eyes on training. Eyes on details. Eyes on Paris. Because as I said, I want to show myself what I’m capable of , and I’ll work as hard as needed to reach my goals.”

The 2023 European Qualifiers climbing results also included Italy’s Laura Rogora. Despite having the lowest score amongst the final eight competitors leading into the lead round, Rogora was able to pull things around by reaching the highest point amongst the climbers on the lead wall. This secured her a place on the podium in third place.
Men’s Combined Lead/Boulder
The men’s combined lead and boulder competition was a close battle amongst formidable competitors. After an amazing show of athleticism in the lead round, Great Britain’s Toby Roberts was able to secure the first place position by being the only competitor to TOP the lead wall.
“My last climb of this season has given me everything I’ve worked for 10 years. It’s a privilege to be here – I will fight harder and train harder. See you in Paris.”

The 2023 European Qualifiers climbing results also include Olympic gold medalist Alberto Ginés López who took second place on the podium, followed by France’s Sam Avezou in third place. López has had some rough seasons after his Olympic gold medal, so it was nice to see him back at the top of his game at the 2023 European Qualifiers.
Avezou had the strongest performance in the men’s boulder round, and was able to pull ahead of Ondra to gain a spot on the podium with his third place finish in the 2023 European Qualifiers climbing results.
Although athletes have received golden tickets to the 2024 Games, the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective NOC teams at the Olympic Games. Athletes’ participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024. To learn more about the Road to Paris, check it out here.
