Complete Guide to the LA28 Sport Climbing Qualification System
Table of Contents
The road to the 2028 Summer Olympics is officially mapped out for sport climbing. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has posted the official sport climbing qualification system for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, USA, also known as LA28.
LA28 will feature three separate medal events: Lead climbing, Speed climbing, and Bouldering. Unlike Tokyo 2020 Olympic’s combined format, this new format offers individual Olympic titles in each discipline, with each discipline having its own qualification pathway.
Here’s a complete breakdown of the sport climbing qualification system by quota spots, qualification events, country limits, cross-qualification rules, and key restrictions.

LA28 Cross-Qualification Rules
The sport climbing qualification system stipulates that athletes may qualify in multiple disciplines, but important restrictions apply:
- An athlete is only counted once toward the total Olympic quota
- The first qualification earned chronologically determines the allocated quota
- Additional qualifications become participation rights, not additional quota spots
- If an athlete withdraws from a confirmed quota, they lose participation rights in other disciplines
LA28 Athlete Eligibility

To compete in Olympic sport climbing at LA28, the sport climbing qualification system requires athletes to:
- Be born in 2011 or earlier
- Hold a valid international license from World Climbing
- Not be suspended during the Olympic year
- Comply with Olympic Charter and anti-doping regulations

Reallocation of Unused Quota Places
What does the sport climbing qualification system say about reallocating unused quota places? If a quota is declined or unused:
- It goes to the next highest eligible athlete from that event
- If no eligible athlete is available, the place is reallocated via the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) ranking
- All reallocations respect the 2-per-gender per country limit
Host and universality places also revert to OQS if unused.
