Evolv Defy Review: Performance
The Evolv Defy performs best on moderate terrain and gym climbing, where comfort and versatility matter more than precision. Its flat, neutral shape and soft construction make it easy to use for extended sessions, allowing climbers to stay on the wall longer without discomfort. While it can handle a variety of routes, it is most effective on slabs, vertical walls, and light overhangs rather than highly technical sequences.
One of the Defy’s defining characteristics is its comfort and accessibility. The soft midsole and forgiving fit make it ideal for beginners or anyone prioritizing all-day wear. The Trax rubber outsole provides decent grip for general use, especially on larger footholds and indoor volumes. However, the softer build means it lacks the support needed for sustained edging on small holds.
Hooking performance is functional but limited. The heel is comfortable but not highly structured, which can reduce security on aggressive heel hooks. Toe hooking is also minimal due to limited rubber coverage and the shoe’s relaxed shape.
Evolv Defy Review: Durability
The Evolv Defy is said by many users that climbs two to three times a week that these shoes will last 6-9 months. The Defy uses 4.2mm of Trax rubber, which is quite durable over consistent use. While these shoes do exhibit typical signs of wear over time and are not among the most long-lasting options on the market, they provide reliable performance and represent a strong choice for beginners.
Evolv Defy Review: Comfort
This is a great all-day climbing shoe. Hands down, it is one of the most comfortable beginner shoes on the market. The soft synthetic upper adapts well to the foot over time, creating a secure yet forgiving feel. The shoe tongue opens very wide so that it is easy to slip in and out of the shoe. In addition, the dual Velcro closure allows for quick adjustment and allows the user to make it snug around the foot.
Evolv Defy Review: Sizing & Fit
Size the Evolv Defy in the neutral position with your toes just touching the end of the shoe. It will feel like everyday street shoe fit.
Because the material has minimal stretch, most climbers can choose their street shoe size or slightly tighter depending on preference. This allows for a balance between comfort and a secure fit without becoming overly tight during longer sessions.

Overall Verdict
The Evolv Defy is one of the most reliable entry-level climbing shoes on the market, prioritizing comfort, affordability, and versatility for beginner climbers. It is generally around half the price of high-end performance shoes, which makes it a great starter shoe for climbers just starting off in the sport and are still developing precise footwork.
Performance wise, it definitely will reach its limits on small footholds, steep overhangs, and technical edging, where more aggressive shoes outperform it. Yet, as a beginner climber this shoe meets the expectations required for entry level climbing in the areas of performance and comfortability.
