2023 Oceania Qualifiers: Combined and Speed Climbing Results

The 2023 Oceania Qualifiers were hosted in Melbourne, AUSTRALIA where the next round of Olympic qualification for speed and combined (lead & boulder) climbing took place. From November 23 to 26, more than 60 professional climbers from Australia, New Zealand and Guam took part in both events to compete for their chance to qualify for one of the four quota spots available for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Women’s Speed Results for 2023 Oceania Qualifiers Melbourne

History was made as New Zealand celebrates not one, but two speed climbers who have qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games. New Zealand’s Sarah Tetzlaff edged out the competition by taking home the gold medal in the women’s speed event. Tetzlaff was trailing her opponent, Australia’s Grace Crowley, in the final round, but made an impressive lunge to the finish that clocked her ahead of Crowley with a score of 8.54s to Crowley’s 8.88s.

Joining Tetzlaff and Crowley on the podium was New Zealand’s Abby Gebert after a strong finish of 9.17s against compatriot Jorja Rangi‘s 9.53s finish in the small final.

Men’s Speed Results for 2023 Oceania Qualifiers Melbourne

New Zealand’s Julian David took home the gold medal in the men’s speed competition with a time of 6.77s. His victory came after Australia’s Hayden Barton stumbled midway through the race forcing him to take home the silver medal with a 7.50s finish.

Coming in third place with the bronze medal was New Zealand’s Flynn Chisholm with a finish of 7.09s. His competitor, Australia’s Dylan Marlow, fell during the small final allowing Chisholm to easily take third place.

Women’s Combined Results for 2023 Oceania Qualifiers Melbourne

Australia’s Oceana Mackenzie proved untouchable at the Olympic qualifying round in Melbourne. She ended the women’s combined final round with a nearly perfect score of 199.9. This gold medal allows her to qualify for her second Olympic Games where she will be representing Australia yet again at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Joining Mackenzie on the podium were her compatriats Australia’s Maya Stasiuk who took home the silver medal and Emily Scott with the bronze medal.

Men’s Combined Results for 2023 Oceania Qualifiers Melbourne

Australia’s Campbell Harrison will be attending his first Olympic games in Paris after he won the gold medal at the Oceania qualifying event in men’s combined. After struggling behind his competitors in the boulder round, he turned things around when he finished the lead round with a TOP which secured him the gold medal at this years event.

Harrison’s performance in the lead round catapulted him past compatriot Sam Lavender, who had been leading proceedings after the boulder section with a 68.7 score. Lavender was able to take home the silver medal at this years competition followed by Australia’s Dylan Parks with the bronze medal.

Road to Paris

Although athletes have received golden tickets to the 2024 Games, the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective NOC teams at the Olympic Games. Athletes’ participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024. To learn more about the Road to Paris, check it out here.
